Age related macular degeneration linked to heart attacks

March 2, 2008 by Kendra James, RN

Age related macular degeneration is now being linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

Researchers found the risk of dying from the cardiovascular conditions was at least doubled in people with AMD.

Is it that AMD is a sign that the body is aging, the drugs used to treat the disease process increase ones risk for heart disease or the vascular areas of the eyes develop plaque and inflammation just as ones heart? The study was fairly inconclusive to the exact reasoning behind the numbers and admitted in needing further studies.

One good thing that came out of this though…

A second study in the same journal highlights variations in genes that control the production of chemicals involved in inflammation as a possible key to AMD.
