Alex Barton on the Early Show

May 30, 2008 by Kristina Chew, PhD

Just up on CBS are two interviews with Melissa Barton, Alex Barton’s mother, on the Early Show; the video from this morning’s show also features Dr. Jed Baker, a clinical psychologist and an expert on autism spectrum disorder behavior and education. Alex is in both videos (waving to the audience at one point, it seems). Odd One Out has been keeping a list of bloggers (94 so far) and I’ll be adding blog posts about Alex on this post throughout the day.

Yes I just watched them [you can't skip the advertisements but don't click on both play buttons at the same time or you'll damage your hearing!]
    Cheers

    Thanks for sharing this.

    Have a great weekend!

  3. I turned both on at once (hate to wait for those ads to pass) and had to put the sound down…….

  4. That was a nice video. I am reading Dr. Baker’s book and even had it with me at the IEP earlier this week.

  5. Another Voice says:

As in any profession there are good teachers and some not so good. It is heartening to see so many people, from all over the world, object to the inconsiderate behavior of Alex’s teacher. Reportedly over 1,000 e-mails have been sent to his school district.

In reading the various posts about what occurred, there were quite a number of comments that spoke about teachers who are going about the business of teaching in a very caring and considerate manner. They seem to get it.

I think it would be great if those school districts also received 1,000 e-mails. Each message telling them how proud we are of Ms. XYZ and to let her attitude be contagious.

  6. I just remembered that I got an email last Friday (May 23) in the AM and responded before taking Matt to school. It was from ABC news health section about doing a section on autism at their site.

The last on call section is on allergies:

    http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Allergies

I think it will be soon that they have it ready for autism. She called me as I was cooking eggs for a quick bite before we headed off to the Zoo so I was a bit distracted. I told her about Regional Centers in CA and about being an IHSS worker for my son, and she was interested in knowing why I was a sngle parent – if divorce due to autism played a part (I said NO, ex is paranoid schizophrenic and we split before Matt was born). She said another single parent told it was. She was going to call back another day to talk more. She has my website so maybe an article of mine will be linked? Did you get contacted?

  7. No, I didn’t get contacted—–do you know what the focus of the website will be? Will look at that link you noted.

Also, an article in the June 1st Palm Beach Post about how schools walk a “fine line” on where to place autistic students.

  8. It looks like it will be extensive data by the looks of the other sections under health.

They have breast cancer, diabetes, pain management, heart disease, mind & body and allergies.

Next topic is scheduled to be autism.

  9. that should read mind & mood not (body)

  10. Interesting article from your comment, although I hate the ending when they refer to “these kids”. I did check out that project link site, but they are in NY.

It looks like all the On call subjects with Dr. Tim Johnson at ABC News cover four issues and they have a top medical centers section and the top questions. They have taped responses to questions with a pop up window from a DR (specialist). I wonder who the experts will be on the topic of autism?

  11. Especially since so many—too many?—-claim “autism expertise” while quite lacking it—–

  12. I was just reading about how cards are being sent to Alex and it made the news showing him opening a box. Here is the site with details and the link to the video story:

  13. FYI – I just posted a link to a site about the cards being sent to Alex from all over. If the link does not go thru must be in moderation. The site is mommylife dot net. My links never seem to get posted and others are and I keep getting errors when I post. Is it just me?
