Americans working into their nineties

An article on MSNBC, Some Americans stay on the job into their 90s, offers more insight into the aging workforce.

We thought it was just the baby boomers rocking the workplace, but, according to this article, some people are choosing to work into their nineties. And, it also points out that there may be some places where 4 generations are working together.

While I hate to see instances where older people are forced to work well beyond retirement age, I think it’s kind of neat to see the ones that choose to do so.

My father may end up being one of those people (he’s 74, and, a high school teacher), who knows? My MIL just recently retired at the age of 83.

For some people, like my dad, it’s what keeps them going, and, vibrant.

As much as I joke about wanting to win the lottery, and, quit my job (I actually probably wouldn’t quit, but, it makes a good saying), I’m not sure I can see myself stopping work at 65.

OK, the real reason I can’t see myself retiring at 65 is that I’ll still have a young adult who may very well still be in college.

Nonetheless, I work, it’s just what I’ve always done, and, I hope I still have that choice when I’m 90.

  1. I don’t dream about not having to work, but I do dream about having the flexibility to choose how much I work, and when. And like you, I don’t know if I’ll ever be done paying for college as Daughter #2 appears to be on the 5 or 5+ year plan! In my mind, I’ve already spent the out-of-state tuition I’ll save some day on a million home repairs and some spa time…..sigh!

My 84 year old client just retired so she could spend more time volunteering. There are no signs of her slowing down, and she’s as happy as a clam.
