Swimming pools date back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Their popularity rose during modern times in the mid-19th century, when the construction of swimming pool were spurred on by the popularity of Olympic swimming.

Infinity edge pools or vanishing edge pools, popular in hotels, provide the illusion that the pool extends far into the horizon or to infinity. To add to the illusion, they are usually built on cliffs or on a beach where there is an unrestricted view of the ocean.

Guinness World Records lists the largest swimming pool as being over 3,300 feet (1,000 m) long.
