An Organic Encounter

I was shopping at my local neighborhood grocery this afternoon, suspiciously sniffing the organic produce. Why does organic produce always look so…icky? Anyhow, I went to the ‘poor man’s’ (non-organic) produce and selected a lovely lime.
Suddenly, a voice behind me interrupted my produce perusal.
“You really should get the organic limes, you know.”
I turned around to encounter a tall, floppy-haired lad, with ripped tennis shoes and a long dangly earring in his left ear. This did not bode well for him. Guys with dangly earrings annoy me excessively. I glanced at the organic limes, 85 cents apiece, small and mealy and dotted with suspicious brown holes. Then I looked down at the plump, luscious, bright green non-organic lime I held. “But this one is just a dime,” I countered. “And it doesn’t look like it has the measles.”
Dangle-Earring sighed and spoke slowly as though explaining something to a stupid child. “Organic fruit is better for you.”
I looked into his shopping cart, which held: a 12-pack of Coors, a box of Twinkies, and two measle-y limes.
“Yeah,” I replied. “I can tell you’re really concerned about your health.” Then I sauntered away, proudly holding my non-organic lime like a very bad, but triumphant, vegan.

That is so funny, I’m quite the opposite when it comes not to limes, but lemons. I get suspicious when they look too good!
I had a similar thought cross my mind as I was shopping at my local mart looking at tomatos. I was picking tomatos for an appetizer for dinner, organic in hand, when I came across regular tomatos. They looked so tasty I thought to myself.
I picked up a giant red tomato and compared it to my organic tomato. The regular tomato was bright red, twice the size of the organic, and a third the price. I thought about it for a moment and walked to the cashiers line with the regular tomato in tow.
It tasted quite good! I tried relaying my experience to a friend, who couldn’t quite understand it – afterall, I’m a non-descriminate carnivour. It left quite an impression in my mind though, so much so that I think I’ll bring it up in my discussion group tomorrow.
Out of the mouths of babes… (and non-babes).
I laughed at this post. But good!!
Hi Mitchell and KleoPatra! I’m glad you liked the entry. Mitchell–how did the discussion go?
