Anais Nin

I have to admit; I’ve never read any of Anais Nin’s diaries.

Ok, I did try once, but just couldn’t get into them. I know a lot of people are thoroughly inspired by her diaries, though, so perhaps I should try again. Anyway, you can read excerpts of her diaries here to get a taste. Be warned, though; the red page is quite hard on the eyes. You may prefer to highlight the page for easier reading. There’s also plenty of other links on that site to lead you to more information about Anais Nin if you are interested.

I have read all of her journals, both the original expurgated volumes and the “unexpurgated” ones (which were edited by her second husband.” They will definitely not be to everyone’s tastes, because she was very much concerned with herself, how she influenced people, how they reacted to *her*, and what she liked/desired, and not so much concerned with things that did not fit into those categories.

What draws me back to her writing are: the way she turned her life into her fiction, ruthlessly using friends and loved ones as recognizable characters; the way one can see some of her writing develop over time (with great writers, it often looks seamless; with lesser writers, one can see how things are shaped); and a morbid curiosity about how she was willing to lie to please herself, attain her desires, and amuse herself — and how many people were willing to support her and feign belief in her lies, just to have her in their lives. (I sometimes wish that I could be that laser-like in my devotion to my own desires, but my head always weighs mine against the people around me/the community.)

  2. Lol, thanks for the input Velma. I suppose anything you, or anyone else, has to say only makes me more curious. I know what you mean; I’m more likely to be concerned how others will view me. Sad, perhaps. I’m still not sure. ;-)

I probably will give her writings another read at some point. Thanks again for commenting. ;-)
