And the beat goes on

Sunday was my Dad’s birthday, it was also the first “occasion” to pass since my mother died. Overall, he is doing well with everything, but, I’m sure this event highlighted his situation.

We took him out to lunch as is customary for our family, but, we went to a restaurant that wasn’t “usual” for us, perhaps to signify new traditions, I dunno. We had a nice time, and, had cake and ice cream at his house afterward. It went well and wasn’t as melancholy as it had potential for being, but, I was thrown a bit of a loop by my oldest child. She turned 12 this weekend, and, as if someone flipped a switch on her, she is suddenly more into her friends than us. I nearly had to punish her for her attitude about going out to lunch. Granted, I had to pull her away from something she was doing since that activity came up after we had planned lunch, but, still, I thought she would at least be a little enthused that we were going to do something nice for her grandfather.

I know this is to be expected for her age, and, I am glad she is developing normally, I just wasn’t counting on managing her my dad’s developmental milestones on the same day.

  1. We had our first milestone with my Father-In-Law last Christmas. And we will be doing it again this Christmas. And trust me, your daughter is definitely normal! My kids prefer Christmases the way they used to be.

I never saw myself as stuck in the middle, but it seems that exactly where I am!

Oh boy!!! You hope and hope-against-hope that it is going to be “different with your kid” but as soon as the hormones kick in, it seems that EVERY teen (and just shy of teen) hits that stride of “friends before family” mode.

Just out of curiosity, who’s idea was it to change from the “usual” location for the celebratory luncheon?

Hello, stopped by off of Latte mans blog, and thought I would check it out. I have kids that put friends before family also. What is up with that?

will stop by again. (need to stop by busymom again also.)

    Take care!
