Anorexia, Bulimia, Depression, Prozac — what you should know

It’s been recognized that depression often goes hand-in-hand with eating disorders — I know in my case that was definitely true — so please be careful when medicating during recovery. This includes “self-medicating”, such as taking over-the-counter herbal supplements. You never know how your body will react to their ingredients, and it’s better to be safe than sorry… or worse.
An antidepressant alone (as in without therapy) may actually make your ED worsen, especially if you’re a teen. Apparently, some of the common pills, most notably Prozac, have been known to have unexpected affects in younger brains. The “trigger” can even lead to suicide in extreme cases.
This isn’t new news, but it’s definitely important to remember if you’re one of the estimated millions (that’s right — MILLIONS) who suffer from an eating disorder such as anorexia (ana), bulimia (mia), binge eating disorder (BED) and/or EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified.)
