Another day at the office

My office is in my home, a few feet away from the kitchen, and overlooking my front yard. Does this ever happen to you — You get stuck…you can’t make a decision, your ideas are not flowing, you stare out in to space, everthing seems dingy?

Plus, everyday when school lets out, the neighborhood girls (’tweens) seem to congregate in front of my house. I don’t have children so someone needs to explain this to me…but why, oh why do they scream when they are playing?

What does your office look like…what do you have around you that gets your brain pumped?

Anyway, some of this stuff has got me thinking about either moving my office to another part of the house. The space I now occupy is an amalgam of my Pet Set materials, office equipment photos of my dog, a slinky that holds my business cards and the rest of my surroundings is made up of 40 year old room decor, including red paneling, photos of my husband’s parents, and just general junk.

Time for a more inspired space…but will that get me out of my funk? Would having a spiffier office help me to stay focused?…will it help me become a more creative and inspired entrepreneur?

Tell me what your office looks like…what surrounds you to help get your brain moving?

While I mostly for for The Man at the moment, I’m working on transitioning to part time, before going full time self-employed (part of which is for one of the rival blog networks… sshhh..).

My work ‘office’ (part of a cubicle farm, actually) is as dull as a very dull thing.

My home office at least has a stereo, and a few favourite block-mounted posters and framed photos.

With decoration, my rule is that if I look at it, and don’t at least get a mental smile/good feeling out of it, it’s time to replace it. Once I manage to get a bit more space for my work-from-home life, I have a few more pieces planned, ones that will be real projects, and will funk up the office quite a lot.

Also I’d like to rabidly avoid clutter – my next step is to get bookshelves with doors on them, since they tend to look untidy when you have as many books as I do. I’m a geek and a gadget fan, so I have far too many cables under/around my desk – those will need to be tidied/organised better.

Fiscal restraints aside, I don’t see why my home office should be anything less than a joy to be in. I think that’ll be a constantly evolving target, but if I work happier in that, then why not?

Sounds like a plan, the more your office reflects you; the more productive you’ll be.

Best of luck and much success.
