Researchers are considering the fact that the Mediterranean Diet may help decrease the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.  In a study by researchers from Columbia University Medical Center, funded by NIH/NIA, the positive effects of this type of diet seems evident.

The Mediterranean Diet consists of foods generally consumed by people living in countries around the Mediterranean Sea.  When American ate these foods – fruits, vegetables, cereals, legumes, some dairy, and fish rather than meat and saturated fats  – and limited their alcohol intake, it seemed their risk of being afflicted with Alzheimer’s was lowered.  The figure, the researchers came up with is a 40% decrease in Alzheimer’s among Americans who closely followed the diet.

Information about this study can be found at the Alzheimer’s Association site: http://www.alz.org/ .
