Another reason to cherish the time your time with your children

I’m not one to get sentimental but I’m finding that, lately, things are getting to me that never did before.
Today, it was my husband and our 17-year-old were emptying out the back shed so we could clean things up for the upcoming winter. This year, it was time to give away/throw out the kiddie stuff that hasn’t been used for years, like perfectly good but no-longer used sleds and snow-riders, a pair of kiddie skis, a basketball backboard, and various other things like that.
I remember when my youngest, the one who was helping clean out, bought those skis at a garage sale. He was so thrilled with them, but I can’t recall him using them. We live about a mile from a fabulous sledding hill and I remember taking the kids to the hill to use those snow-riders.
Another thing I remember is when we moved into this house 9 years ago, we had an added winter treat that we didn’t expect. We live on a small crescent with a small piece of land in the center. So, when the snowplows clear the nearby streets, the snow gets dumped in the middle of our crescent. The kids had a great time climbing that hill and building snow forts. Some winters, it got so high that the kids could climb easily into the tree branches. Then, every so often, the city trucks come by and take all the snow away, to let the pile grow again a few weeks later.
Yes, I’m finding that I’m getting nostalgic and melancholy – definitely not my usual style. So, when I caution you not to rush your baby’s childhood, don’t rush your life. They really do grow up too fast.

Marijke,
So true. Although sometimes it is impossible. My baby sister was in such a hurry to grow up when she was twelve. I had to padlock the closet to keep her out of my high heels!
Hi Katelyn – I remember someone once telling me, if you want to speed up time, have kids!
