Antique Pick of the Week: Rusty Chicken Feeder

Up soon, I’ll show you the work of a very interesting organic artist. Until then, ponder upon a rusty chicken feeder, won’t you?

chicken-feeder.jpgI saw this on a recent trip to a local antiques store. I know it’s marketed for a person who has a country-style home, but all I can think of is someone unearthing it from an old shed beside an abandoned farmhouse. Someone once fed little chics with it before its rusty days. Now, it’s a piece of deco? Suppose so, but the other thing this reminded me of is feeding 4-H chickens. Yeah, I had some chickens. And I used one of these.

Is it just me, or do rusty “antiques” turn you off? Maybe it’s my irrational fear of tetanus… Also, the only reuse idea I could think of for this is a container garden. Do you have any ideas?

I’m a city girl (and have never owned chickens), but I’m very handy with rust-o-leum spray paint. One or two coats and you’ve got a great container for a window-ledge herb garden. :-)

Sandy, that’s actually what I was picturing — little herbs sticking out of the feeder holes. I’m not sure if it’s entirely practical, but how cute would that be?

    Thanks for the rust-o-leum tip!

Yeah, kitchen herbs was what hit me, too. I used to use these back on the farm. Sometimes I miss the chickens, sometimes I’m glad they’re far away.

Julie, I liked free-roaming chickens, but if they were in a pen it was kind of sad to me. They’d eat all the grass and walk around on dirt. Of course, the free roaming ones had a greater chance of getting killed by a dog or wolf, etc.

I guess I don’t miss chickens that much either.

Mine were all free roaming, better eggs that way! Plus the hens can hide nests and you get surprise chicks :-)
