Are You “going green” in your Alzheimer’s Home?

Are you practicing “green” living in your home? Perhaps it’s difficult to do so in an Alzheimer’s home. Perhaps you’re not too enthusiastic about “going green” and feel it takes too much effort. Maybe you don’t believe it helps.
You don’t have to be a fanatic, simply practice some frugal ways that also may help the environment and your home.
At our home, we:
- Separate the cans and bottles to take to the town recycling center. (They sort of require this.)
- Used cold water rinsing for the clothes. (This should help cut down on the electric bill if you heat your water with electricity.)
- Kept the paper trash separate from the kitchen trash so we can put it into the paper collection at the recycling center. (This also is recommended at the center and brings in income for the town when they sell the paper and other recycled items.
- Cooked several dishes at once in the oven to save electricity. (Again saving money.)
- Turned off lights we weren’t using them. (Another thrifty idea.) However, with Alzheimer’s patients, you often do have to leave some lights on so they aren’t frightened and can find their way around.
These are items we try to make into a habit, so we almost do them without thinking. Do you have any suggestions?
