When many of us think of the cost of chronic illness and chronic pain, we think of the up front costs. Doctors’ visits if you live where you must pay for that, lost work days to illness, or even buying adaptive aids to help manage. But there are other social costs. One such cost is from many people who are chronically ill who retire early.
They lose their earnings and decrease spending. Society loses experienced employees and must train replacements. This can add up to quite a cost.
A study addressing this issue was published in The European Journal of Health Economics: Rheumatoid arthritis sends many into early retirement.
