Asthma and Blog of the Week: The Angry Asthma Mama
This week’s featured blog is The Angry Asthma Mama written by Aimee, mother of two asthmatic sons and a new baby boy, Iggy, born December 20, 2005. In the U.S., more than 5 percent of people are affected by asthma. Almost everyone knows someone who has experienced a scary attack of asthma.
The genetics of asthma is a hot area of research and chromosomes 5, 6, 11, 14, and 12 have all been linked to the disease. In particular, genes coding for key molecules in the inflammatory response seen in asthma are located on chromosome 5.
The Angry Asthma Mama keeps up with the latest in asthma news, treatments, and research. Most interestingly, she shares practical tips and insights into caring for children with asthma. Just before Iggy was born, Aimee wrote:
Honestly, let’s just pray that s/he doesn’t develop asthma. It would be nice to have one child that I don’t have to administer corticosteroids to. It would be nice to not have to CRANK the monitor every night so I can listen to the babies breathe.
Here’s hoping Angry Asthma Mama and boys won’t have to spend too much time in the doctor’s office in 2006!

I hope that research continues without intervention. I’m sure something can be made to attack asthma.
Nat: Thanks for the comment. I also have high hopes for using genetic information to optimize medical treatment, not just for asthma but for all chronic conditions.
Thank you so much for posting this. My daughter has asthma. It’ll be nice to get another Mama’s take on it, as well as all the current info she provides. Thanks! Jessi
Thank you so much for featuring my blog. It’s so nice to know that someone other than me reads it!
Asthma is a tough illness – on both the kids and us parents. It’s scary, it’s labor intensive, and it’s frighteningly mysterious. It’s great to have a network of parents to talk things over with, to vent our fears to, etc. That’s why I started the blog, and I’m happy it’s grown the way it has.
Again, thank you for the mention!
I know what you’re talking about, being asthmatic and a father of an asmatic boy.
Although I can say that the quality of our lives is quite good and we don’t have big problems because of our asthma, let’s hope the future gives as good news about asthma!
I recently created a small asthma blog, where I plan to share asthma information and serve as a point of contact.
It’s just starting, but feel free to visit it and leave comments!

Simply staying away from the car exhaust should begin to heal your family. Sounds like someone who hates you is pouring chlorine in the gas tank which makes phosgene gas and causes asthma. Drive less, stay off the sidewalks, and smartin up before they kill you. Chemicals burn creating brain cancer as well. The evil media, medical estemblishment, and Murdock are always blaming tobacco for deaths because they’re the little guys.
I had asthma as a kid and fully got over it by playing a wind instrument – the clarinet. Since my teens I have never had it. I think the clarinet strengthened my lungs. I would recomend playing a wind instrument because of what it did for me. Just recently I came across an interesting article on the BBC titled “Housework ‘can cause asthma” . Read this, it may help to know how it can be triggered.

Hi there. I have been suffering with asthma my whole life, especially the last couple years since we got our 2 cats. I was taking my puffer pretty much every day and my quality of life was really bad..hard to sleep..tired during the day…. For the last month i have been taking a new natural organic suppliment that was recommended by a good friend of mine. I didn’t believe it at first, but figured I would try anything to help me out. It’s quite unbelievable, I haven’t used my puffer for the last month. My mission is to help others get relief from asthma… (edited) I would love to talk to you!

My cousin and her husband have been having a very difficult time giving breathing treatments to my 24-month-old godson who has asthma. I also have the same problem when I baby-sit for him as he fights me every time I try to give him a treatment. They discovered this great new product called the KidO’s Bear that delivers medication through the Bear. This has made these treatments so much easier with no fighting. It works so well I actually bought one for my house so I don’t have to go through the fighting anymore when he comes to visit. This has made our lives easier so I thought I would let other parents going through this same situation know that there are other options.
“When reviewing the rapid increases of asthma rates in America, it is critical to recognize the link between pollution and human health, including chemical and biological pollutants in indoor environments.”

I have had asthma since I was born and still do at the age of 40. However, it has not stopped me doing anything in my adult life. I a qualified karate instructor which is very physical and also run two businesses, which is very stressfull. One of which is a karate business funnily enough. Don’t get put off by all the hype that asthma is a negative thing. The only reason I took up karate was to improve my asthma after all. Would I have done to the level I got to if I wasn’t asthmatic? Who knows? When I was first diagnosed with asthma the best they could give me was cough medicine! Imagine that!
Still, wishing you and your children all the best, Kyu
