Astrophysicists have gone Star Wars in preventing the spread of malaria. Scientists in the US are working on a laser gun that will kill millions of mosquitoes in mere minutes. Bill Gates funded the research for the laser gun as a new way to combat malaria.

CNN reported that the laser would detect mosquitoes by zoning in on the beating of their wings. Some of the scientists working on this laser were also involved in the “Star Wars” anti-missile programs during the Cold War.
According to the CDC, pregnant women and young children in affected areas and travelers who lack immunity are most at risk for malaria. Travelers to high-risk areas are encouraged to use insecticide-treated nets.
Even though malaria has been eliminated from the US and western Europe, the CDC warns that reintroduction of the disease is a constant risk. Malaria is also a leading cause of death in developing countries that could greatly benefit from the new laser gun technology.
Have you practiced malaria prevention in your daily life or while traveling?
