Steve: Many companies are going down the drain for sure if this legislation goes through because they can’t pass FDA requirements. But those who are able to jump through the hoops successfully will be able to provide a valuable service to the consumer. Problem is, we’ll have to wait even more years for that to happen.

If this bill passes (and I am sure it will), then this will be the beginning of the end for DTC testing. The Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health and Society has big issue with the DTC marketing. Personally as an Internal Medicine Physician and a partially trained geneticist I feel that it is dangerous to provide testing without proper counseling. Patients will and have ended up skipping colonscopies, or thinking they don’t have hemochromatosis when in fact they a Non-HFE mutation. The education gap is just ass bad with most MD’s as well. There are only 83 board certified Internist/Geneticists in the United States yet over 160 million adults…….
