If you are traveling to a foreign country, it’s important that you try to learn a little bit of the language before you arrive. Knowing the basic terms will help you find a restaurant, the restroom or directions when you get lost. You can take a language course at your local community college or online. You may also consider purchasing a language learning software to learn at your own pace.

Recently, I was introduced to Auralog’s language learning software. They offer several languages at up to 10 levels. You can check out a demo and purchase their products at tellmemore.com.
Auralog has identified a list of popular travel pitfalls, when it comes to language. Some of them can be really embarrassing to you or offensive to others. Auralog’s language learning software aims to teach more than just words and vocabulary. They teach the culture and current events, so you can learn not to offend. Have you ever made one of these common travel blunders:
- Ordering a dish containing something you’re allergic to, or unable to eat for religious reasons
- Walking into the wrong restroom
- Accidental swearing
- Overpaying or underpaying for an item
- Greeting native people incorrectly (ie offering the wrong hand, offering your hand when kisses are more appropriate)
- Insulting someone by addressing them with the wrong title or pronoun
- Misinterpreting directions / getting lost

I’ve always wanted to become fluent in a language but it was always too difficult in school. This seems like a better way of doing it, maybe I’ll give it a try!
