I’m back from vacation! Sorry this place has been so quiet. It is definitely not like me.
Sadly, although I’m back, this will be my last post for AHeartyLife.com. Today is also my last day at b5media where I served as writer and editor of the Science and Health Channel. Kendra James, RN will be assuming responsibility over A Hearty Life and the Science and Health Channel. She’s a cardiac nurse with a passion for communication. I can’t think of anyone better to take my place.

Health care blogs are sprouting up with names such as Genetics and Health, Trusted.MD, The Health Care Blog and Diabetes Mine. They typically link to other health care blogs, forming a loose network of shared information that might or might not stand up to inspection by the American Medical Association.

“We’re entering an era where blogs have become the new credible source of health information because much of it is coming from people like yourself,” said Craig Lefebvre, a visiting professor at George Washington University’s School of Public Health and Health Services and a consultant to several federal health agencies. “But just like with early Web sites, we will go through a process of sorting out the quality from less quality blogs.”

So what do you think? Do I produce a “quality” blog or a “less quality” blog?

Having the opportunity to write about my lifelong passion is a dream come true. So that I can improve and grow as a genetics blogger, writer, and commentator, I’ll be re-evaluating my future in genetics over the next couple of weeks.
Stay tuned. Big news coming up.

A Florida bill to require DNA testing of pregnant girls under the age of 14 has been voted down. The bill would have asked doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers (including abortion providers) to collect DNA from the girl and her fetus for the purpose of identifying the father for prosecution. Sex with minors under the age of 16 in Florida is a crime.

Opponents are concerned that:

Young pregnant girls would be discouraged from seeking healthcare for fear their boyfriends would be prosecuted. (Although I wonder how many teenagers keep up with legislation surrounding pregnancy.)

Confidentiality between a doctor and a patient would be violated. (Healthcare providers already have to report instances of child abuse although presumably they’d use their best judgment as to whether the teenager engaged in consensual sex or not.)

Sex between two teenagers would be criminalized. (ARGH. As a parent, I dread having to face this issue in the future.)
