Autism Consciousness Week in the Philippines

January 12, 2007 by Kristina Chew, PhD

Every third week of January is National Autism Consciousness Week in the Philippines, by Presidential Proclamation 711 of former President Fidel V. Ramos. The Philippine Information Agency notes that “Autism Challenge: outwit, Outplay, Outlast” is the theme for this year’s week, as announced by the Autism Society Phillippines.

“National Autism Consciousness Week” vs. “Autism Awareness Month”—-I’m trying to think which makes the point better……….

    HI!!!

I am wondering if anyone can supply me with the percentage of autism cases in the Philippines from 1970 to present. As well as developments, if there are any, provided by the caregivers and medical practitioners in the Philippines.

I am sad to see that there are little researches done and available for viewing about the Autism in the Philippines.

    If anybody knows, please email.

  5. Beej: I’ll do some looking myself and put up your request as a post—thanks for the query.

  6. Beej says:

Thanks for the quick response. I have graduated B. S. Psychology from the Philippines as well. Anyway, I am going to do some post graduate studies in Canada about ASD and I thought it might be helpful to me if I knew information about ASD history in my country.

This way, I’d be able to help more and combine studies with practise. Thanks again.

  7. George Wade says:

    Beej,

Many of us think that the best synergy for a majority of ASD children is Orthomolecular Medicine style nutrition + detoxification + Applied Behavioural Analysis training.

There is a war of words over these ideas. Taking the best of many worlds and combining them seems better than logical wars, to me.

    Ref: Autism Research Institute http://www.autismwebsite.com/ari/index.htm

    http://www.danwebcast.com/

Canada as a whole lags behind the US for study of ASD. If you can find ABA training and then research ARI / DAN! methodology that might be one of the best ways to start for a Psych grad?

  8. Beej, If I may ask, are you planning to teach or work with autistic children? What kinds of schools or services for autistic children are there now in the Philippines? Still working on your question about the number of autism cases……. Education and good teaching are what I focus my advocacy on.

  9. Beej says:

Thanks George Wade for those information and suggestions. I will look them up. Very well appreciated. :)

Anyway, Kristine, I think I will be focusing on working with them. Though teaching is still in my list. It depends where I’m really good at hehehe.

So, in the Philippines, the services offered in schools are minimal, not much like in the US and there isn’t much funding either. So it really depends on individuals and private sponsors/institutions. However, there are some institutions and programs which are trying to keep up.

Thanks for looking it up, really appreciate it. But if it proves to be very hard, you don’t have to really push for it. Maybe I could research on it in the future and give the stats. We’ll see.

    Many thanks again. :)
    More power to everyone here!!!

  10. A mom I know runs this website for the Filipino-American Autism Community—and now I am curious about the stats!

Hello everyone! I’m marrid to a Phillipeno and our youngest has just been diagnosed with ADHA. My mother and I both have dyslexia to some some exent, and I know it is all related. I work with children and know them with ADHA, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and Autism’s of all sorts. My problem is…my husband says there’s no such thing. When he grew up in the Phillipeans no-one had them…it’s all in the head…they are just lazy! Everyone can spell, and our child ’s just a bit naughty…How can I convince him that this does not mean our child is unitelligent…far from it, or that he has a “disease”. He says the whole thing is made up by the western world…..HELP!

    Dear Kristina,
We are looking for a shadow and therapist for our very verbal 3 year old daughter in Tokyo. We need someone with a great understanding of social communication (in English) and with verbal behavior training. We will offer a great educational opportunity with a lot of program support, and also a generous compensation package. Where can I find such a candidate in the Philippines? Thanks!

  16. Elizabeth, I am not quite sure how to answer your question and will put out some queries. Hope things are well, Kristina

  17. Cecile says:

Hello everyone, i am a shadow teacher for a 6 year old who has been diagnosed to be ADHD, ODD and intellectually gifted. He is my first student. I never had an experience handling special kids. I just worked as a preschool teacher for almost 10 years. The kid is a friend’s son. So i accepted the job. Now i am so gaga about autism. I read any single material i can gert my hands into. According to his OT after less than a year he has improved a lot. This forum is a good venue to exchange ideas and ask questions.

  18. Cecile, Thanks so much for writig here—–I’d like much to know how your experiences in your new position go. Did you receive any specialized training?

  19. Gianina Griffin says:

    this is for Victoria Elizaga,

Please inform your Filipino husband that he should be more supportive and to expand his knowledge of the diagnose. Not to be disrespectful

I am Filipino and my husband is an American. We have our son who is diagnosed with Autism and I am happy to say that he (18 yrs old) is doing well. Reason is because my husband gives me 100% emotional support as I worked very hard to help our son.

My father once said that Polio was a white man’s decease, and didn’t accept the polio vaccine. He has regritted saying that because two of his kids got the polio. They are now in their 50’s and are experiencing post-polio for life. This was truly hard for my father, even in his deathbed he can’t stop feeling guilty. This is my father who was a very distingished attorney in the Philippines.

I hope this will help your husband to see the light.
    Good Luck,

    Gianina Griffin

Just want to share a resource for everyone interested in autism treatment. There are 50 Pinoy parents from Manila showing up for a conference on autism treatment in two weeks (Sept 1 1nd 2, 2007) in Hong Kong. Check out http://www.conference.autismpnhk.org This annual conference is organized by the Autism Parents Network Foundation, Hong Kong. We are dedicated to channel resources in autism treatment from the U.S. to local communities in Asia. A friend of mine also set up http://www.autismpinoy.com which has also proven to be a useful resource for pinoys everywhere who work with children with autism.

    For Linda V. Quicosa

I dont know if this would help but I am currently reading this book by Maurice, Catherine “Let Me Hear Your Voice”. I think it does not only provide detailed battle over helping her daughter but also gives insightful(her opinions ofcourse) and some objective concerns over therapies and interventions available for children with ASD.

You can also check her books/articles on other ASD subjects…

Making a Difference: Behavioral Intervention for Autism

Behavioral Intervention for Young Children with Autism: A Manual for Parents …

hello anyone!i could say i didnt graduate caregiver nor trained as caregiver,no matter what course u finish,if u really love to work with special child u have to love that kids and think that he is urs,and be willing to focus with him, what his weakness and his strength it will help you to catch up with him,and dont manipulate him,u are just be the shadow followed what he want, but of course if the dangerous things ur their..hmmmm,try to act like him i mean played with him and let him see you that u are interested with his games, shared some laugh at him,in order for him to fell tht he is comfortable with you,you know im working here its very hard for me because he speak arabic i have to study his language and learned it,and research in everything about autism in internet,it helps me alot from the foods and the way i approach him so that he will never be scared of me,i tried to talk with him in his way of talking convince his parents that their kids are unique and brave and understand eveyrthing around him,but of course this autsim kids they never talk as always, but u,who take care of him is the way or key to voice out his insight and try to understand him…….thats what i learned from him,the autism i took care here in UAE…i have to know thier language i teach him in academic, shopping in supermarket he choose what he want i let him do it im just following him am never afraid that maybe he can made a mistake of course every one have the right i mean costumer is always right,so he is,we played alot, teaching him and asking what he need, asking his feelings sometimes but of course he never voice out what his in mind but as i told you i am trying hard person to interact with these kids,no matter how hard it is i still smile at him and convince him that he must try to do his best and feel the freedom of equality as human being….if you worked with this kids,u will feel happy, and you will never stop searching how to help them to be free and some guides about autism…so no matter if u or not trained as caregiver, all you have to do is love and dedication with ur worked, love ur worked and u will see u will feel contented enough to worked with special kids…..have faith and believe that this kids they can do the normal things doing……

  41. @maricon, am really agreeing with you—the right school and teachers who are well trained in teaching autistic kids has been crucial for our son. And love and devotion make a big difference too for sure.

    Hi,

I just want to know if there are some schools in Manila that adapt the ‘Shadow Teaching’ method or if there are good shadow teachers available who could be hired personally by families to look after their kids in school, coordinate with the teachers regarding the child’s performance in school and acts as a tutor and personal trainer of the child. Do we have specialized teachers in this field?

    Regards,

Hey who’s matt, is he the boy who has problems interacting in a society understood by apathy. The people around him mentally pound, beat the saneness inside of him. Even his own parents wouldn’t acknowledge the point that he has some problems that even his own mind cannot comprehend. Should there be someone helping him.
