Autism in Alabama

The Auburn Autism Center opened in Alabama in 2003 “to help stem the tide of this disorder by offering services to children all over the state,” according to an article in today’s Auburn Plainsman. The article further notes that

The Auburn Autism Center has an interesting approach to combating the disorder. The center heavily emphasizes the importance of engagement amongst the children with each other and their teachers.

I am not quite sure what is meant by “interesting” here—social engagement with peers and with teachers and therapists has always been a part of Charlie’s education. Dare I suggest that the Auburn Plainsman article views autistic children as “withdrawn” and unable to become engaged with others?

The Auburn Autism Center has its work cut out for it.
