Autism Vox Mission Statement: Autism Knocked on the Right Door

I blog here at Autism Vox to spread the word about autism.

My son Charlie was diagnosed with autism on July 22, 1999 and ever since then—-really, from the first moment my husband Jim Fisher and I knew “something was not right,” something was different, about our boy (Charlie did not talk, Charlie screamed when we tried to have him not look at a certain red spot of paint on a St. Paul playground)—-ever since the word “autism” entered our household, it has been our mission and our calling to help Charlie lead the best life he can.

Autism knocked on the right door.

This is what I seek to do to make Autism Vox a unique voice in Autismland.

  1. I strive to provide understanding about autism to make the world a better place for Charlie and all autistic persons.
  2. I strive to advocate for the best education for autistic children, according to the individual needs of each child.
  3. I am a classicist, a professor of ancient Greek and Latin, and I strive to unearth what the ancient Greeks’ and Romans’ understanding of disability, and especially cognitive disability, was.
  4. Of late I have noted some interesting uses of the word “autism” and I strive to clarify what these meanings, some of which draw on stereotypes of autism, are.
  5. In addition to all the information and opinions about autism on the web, there have been more and more books, both by autistic persons and by parents of autistic children, and I strive to provide thoughtful analysis of these varieties of “Autism Lit.”
  6. And through all this, I strive to make the world a better place for autism.

This is what I hope to do here. Thank you for reading Autism Vox and please keep letting me know what you think.
