The bird flu outbreak began in Southeast Asia three years ago. Since that time it has leapfrogged across Asia to Europe, the Middle East and Western Africa.
There have been over 200 million domestic birds killed in order to halt the spread of this disease that has claimed ninety-eight lives. These people probably contracted H5N1 through direct contact with infected domestic birds.
Scientists cannot predict predict when, or even if, the virus will mutate allowing it to develop the ability to transmit between people.
The Washinton Post website has a graphic that shows the spread of avian flu over the last three years.
