Bacon for vegans
My parents, ever the comedians, included this bottle of “Bac’n” bits in the package they sent over from the US for Christmas. I studied the ingredients and found that it was actually not only vegetarian, but vegan. Still, I wasn’t all that excited to try it.
The bottle sat on a shelf neglected for a couple weeks until I felt sorry for it and decided to pour some on a salad. They added an artificial-tasting, smoky crunch that was not necessarily an improvement to the salad. Strike two against the Bac’n Pieces came when my husband complained that my breath smelled like bacon.
Still, I gave them another try the other day, and liked them a little more. They seemed to get better the more I ate. They were appealing in that crunchy, greasy, junk-food kind of way. In other words, not a food I need to really add to my diet. I’d rather get my empty calories from chocolate.

That used to be called Baco Bits! I vaguely recall liking it when I was a kid.
That’s what they were! I knew they seemed familiar, but I had no idea Baco Bits were vegan.
Yep, they are fungus. Nice huh?
I’m hearing you! I used to eat bacon before I became a vegetarian in 2001, but ever since then I can’t even stand the smell, much less have a craving for it.
i’m sticking up for the bac’n bits. that stuff is amazing when your stoned and vegan!
