Bag Design

Recently I tried designing a shoulder bag (no, it’s not a purse) for school. Here are some ideas to keep in mind, if you decide to do the same, someday:
- Keep in mind how much you really want to carry–I think I put one too many compartments in my bag, it gets HEAVY sometimes (especially with my “Complete Works of Shakespeare”).
- Remember that your bag will probably get used in the sun AND rain–Try to think about how to make it weather proof, so that your stuff stays nice–especially those library books!
- Pockets probably ought to have a cover–this is related to #2, but when you put your bag down, if the pocket doesn’t have a cover, you probably will lose something, I have.
- Your bag shouldn’t be bigger than you are–I didn’t have this problem, but I have seen some gigantic bags on some seriously small people. Unless you like walking at a 45 degree angle, try to keep the bag in proportion to your body.
- Pockets should be a usable size–If you want pockets for pens, make them long enough to admit a pen. This sounds simple, but guess who made their pen pocket nearly useless? (Yup, that would be me…)
There could easily be more advice, but I think I’ll save it for later.
Happy Hunting!
