Bangor Maine, May Showers Brings June Flowers
Wait a minute?? I thought it was April shower…..
Well in normal parts of the world April showers do, in fact, bring May flowers. Living in Downeast Maine Spring always comes a bit later than most people and even though we still use the well known phrase “April Showers Brings May Flowers” it really isn’t that true. Some Springs come early but as an average rule, living all my life in Maine it would best be described as “May Showers Brings June Flowers”.
I remember every year May being rain showers and overcast almost all month. Then one day in the first part of June the sun comes out and you know what that brings? Skeeters!
We aren’t quite as bad as Alaska the land of 2 seasons “Snow and Skeeters” but we aren’t that far off really.
This Sunday we planned a lot of time outside getting the yard cleaned up more. We spent time raking last weekend but this was the weekend where we got out the outdoor furniture, got things organized and even took a trip to the Home Depot to get us some cool new stuff for the Summer. Even a nice steak or some chicken on the grill for an early dinner. But nooooo..
Woke up this morning to rain. Rain is in the forecast until Thursday. Lovely..
I can probably count on it raining for the next 3 to 4 weeks before the skeeters come out…

I think I might have just lost a drill because of those wacky spring showers. I left it out in the yard after finishing building a fence last week. Then I got sick and never got around to picking it up. We went out there yesterday and found it. Hopefully it will dry out okay. Our grass is already looking greener thanks to all of the water…except for where the dandelions are, of course.
You lost an entire drill or a bit? Losing a drill is costly
I live abroad and am doing some research on Maine flora and creatures etc. You speak about sceeters. I guess they are mosquitoes. When I was a child, living in Holland, we used to wake up with a closed eye now and again due to having been bitten by a mosquito. Would this happen in May in Maine? What are the general signs that May is there?
Thanks for you help folks,
