Bats Can Be Good. Really!

Having just moved from an urban setting to a small, country town, one of the things I’m having to get used to are bats. Yes, I know, I screamed too. There’s no denying that those little furry, flying mammals are creepy, but what I’m learning is that bats can be good for your garden.

Bats perform a vital ecological role by pollinating flowers and also serve an important role in seed dispersal. Many tropical plants are entirely dependent on bats. In addition, most bats are voracious insect-eaters, an organic way to keep mosquito populations under control.

Hah! We have a big old barn that the bats love. We’ve lived here for over 10 years, and I’m still not used to them. I tell myself on a regular basis that they’re good bug catchers, but that doesn’t decrease the creep factor!
