Being disabled doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant

I have been wanting to write on women who are disabled who get pregnant – I’m sure there are many women who would love to be able to read and learn about the issues that are involved.

Although I had a lot of feelers out trying to find people who may want to discuss the issue, I’ve not had any success yet. But – I can direct you to Disaboom (again!), where Muffy Davis has written a great post about her pregnancy. Muffy is a paraplegic who was trying to get pregnant and has finally succeeded.

I hope she continues to write about her pregnancy and I’ll let you know if I see updates in case you don’t see them yourself. To read Muffy’s post, go to Disability and Pregnancy at Disaboom.

    Hello
I am 30 years old. I was hurt at work 7 years ago and suffer from dibilitating pain in my neack, shoulders and back. I have been struggling for many years to get better and have not gotten much better at all. I would like to have the hope that I will be able to have a child. I have not found anyone who can aanswer my questions though. I see a pain managemnt Dr who perscribes medication to me to help handle my pain. I will probably always be in pain, so do I need to give up the hope of having a child or is there a way?
Also I constatly worry about my Social Security Disability. I think about how I see my pain managemnt Dr very reguarly right now . If I were to become pregnant I have been told they would no longer see me anymore because they could not perscribe my medications to me anymore. So I am afraid that I will come up for review with social security at the same time that I am preggnant and not have Dr that can prove my claim of disability. I can not afford to lose my disabilty income let alone have a child and have it happen.
I also suffer from sacroilitis. It is a severe pain that starts in my right hip, wraps aroound by right buttock, down my right thigh and what feels like under my knee cap. This pain is unsually treated with pain medication, steroids and steroid injections done under exray. So that brings me to another question which is..if this issue where to flare up who would treat it and how is there a treatment that is safe to the baby.
I am sorry if it seems as if I am babling but my husband and I have wanted kids for some time now and I am begining to feel as if my disability has reached the best it is going to get and that if I were to get pregnant social security would stop my bebefits NOT because I am no longer disabled but because i would not have a doctor to say I am disabled. If anyone has any experience with disability reviewing your claim while you are pregnant, and finding a Dr that handles cronic pain and pregnancy I would greatly appriciate it
    Thanks in advance
    Melissa
