Berries for Bone Density

When we first realized my ovaries were damaged beyond repair from chemotherapy and radiation, my oncologist strongly suggested that I add calcium supplements to my routine. Why? Because he feared the estrogen provided by birth control pills or other hormone replacement therapies wouldn’t be enough to stave off the increased risk of osteoporosis.

I know that you already have enough to worry about, but bone density truly should be a concern to anyone with any type of premature ovarian failure.

But what if you’re like me and can’t stand milk (even though it does a body good) and the idea of adding one more big pill to your morning cocktail is enough to make you gag? Relax. There is a sweet solution to this dilemma. Go have some strawberry shortcake. Add some blueberries to your cereal. Take advantage of the “all you can pick” raspberries being offered at local farms. In short, go get berried up.

In a recent study reported in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry,

Rats had their ovaries removed (to mimic an estrogen-deprived, post menopausal state) and were fed blueberries every day for three months. [This] significantly increased their bone density.

Scientists believe that,

“Polyphenols in the berries slowed the rate [of bone turnover] ultimately saving bone.”

Like all studies, more work needs to be done to see if the effects are as dramatic in humans, but I, for one, have no problem justifying my second helping of fresh berries for dessert.

I love this post — I was in chemical menopause until last year when my ovaries were removed to reduce my risk of ovarian cancer and a third breast cancer occurrence when full blown menopause kicked in — I don’t mind the lack of estrogen in my body but I do fear my bone density loss, for the reasons you cited above but also because I’m only 40 and need bone strength to keep up with my kids for the next 40+ years (God willing!).

You not only gave me another reason to eat berries, you reminded me I’m due for a bone density scan!

  2. Gabrielle says:

Oh Karen, I am so glad you mentioned a bone density scan!

A local hospital near me actually offers these FREE for women on certain days. I found out through a little wellness flier that I received in the mail. I mention this because the scan is quick and painless and there may be similar offers in readers’ neighborhoods – either through your local hospital or women’s clinics. Thank you!

  3. berries would be nice since i really dont like those calcium supplement tablets that are quite large.

    Gabs –

WHERE are these pick all you can berries???

  5. Gabrielle says:

arthritistreatment – totally agreed. The size and shape of most calcium supplement pills was what deterred me from them in the first place. I just couldn’t imagine choking one of these down every morning.

melis – at my CSA up in Loysville! Every couple of Saturdays they offer a pick-your-own day for members. Come with me the next time they have one! I know M won’t mind staying at home.
