Best Christmas Ever

LG Rumor cell phone with QWERTY keyboardI mentioned before that we were getting our teen a new cell phone with a QWERTY keyboard to replace the one my husband *ahem* misplaced. We ended up getting him the LG Rumor for two reasons. (1) It was fairly inexpensive and I’m all about inexpensive. And (2) it was the only QWERTY keyboard phone they have at U.S. Cellular that isn’t a smartphone (which has an extra monthly internet charge). He’s only 14. He definitely doesn’t need a smartphone.

We kept seeing these commercials on TV (for Best Buy I think) where the salesperson is talking about a wife wanting to surprise her husband with a new cell phone for Christmas. My husband said, “I suppose you’re going to do that too?” Oh heck yes I am.

So late on Christmas Eve (or possibly even very early Christmas Day…it’s all a big blur now), I turned on the teen’s new cell phone, wrapped it in the Santa wrapping paper and hit it under the tree.

Our surprise was almost foiled when we woke up to a beeping phone on Christmas Day. Somebody had texted him earlier that morning and his phone was beeping to let him know. Who would be texting him? All of his friends knew he lost his phone weeks earlier. Turns out my mom (who was with us when we lost the phone, but is apparently getting old and forgetful…hi mom) texted him with a Christmas greeting.

We played it off like it was my husband’s phone. We just didn’t have time to look for the darn thing so we’d have to suffer through the beeping.

After a few presents were opened my husband secretly called the teen’s cell phone. It started playing a nice little jig and the teen’s eyes got big.

“What’s that?” he exclaimed.

I gave my best look of surprise and said, “I don’t know.”

“Look under the tree,” my husband suggested.

The teen dug in to the presents and found the musical box. He ripped off the wrapping and gawked at his new QWERTY keyboard.

And then something amazing happened. He was so happy he gave me a hug. The teen who I usually have to threaten with big sloppy kisses or snotty noses to get a hug, hugged me. And of his own volition. It was a Christmas miracle.
