If a bird flu pandemic does occur, there will be a delay of approxomately six months in getting a vaccine ready and distributed to the public.

On Monday, March 13, Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt stated that it would take at least that long due to the fact that the virus is constantly mutating and there is no way to know which strain of H5N1 might develop the ability to spread from person-to-person.

Once a particular strain is identified, it wil take at least six months to ensure that any vaccine tests safe and then to produce and distribute it.
