Prey Veng ,a province south of the capital Phnom Penh, is being closely monitored for signs of spread of bird flu. The agriculture ministry confirmed the outbreak of H5N1 virus in the Prey Veng village of Rokar Chuor Timouy, prompting the slaughter of the remaining 400 ducks in that village. The ministry also ordered close monitoring of the surrounding villages, as well as a nationwide “high alert” for the presence of bird flu and a ban on poultry imports from neighboring countries.
The nations that surround Cambodia -Thailand, Laos – have all had bird flu outbreaks in the recent months and Thailand particularly has been continually battling the spread of the disease. Vietnam, which sits to the south of Cambodia, hasn’t had a bird flu incident in 2006, because of drastic move to cut the spread of the virus.
