Black History Month around b5 Media

February is Black History Month in the United States. Black History Month began in 1926 as Negro History Week. The event was started by Carter G. Woodsen (pictured above), a teacher, holder of a Ph.D from Harvard University, and co-founder of the Association for Study of African American Life and History. Mid-February was chosen because it marked the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. It was extended to become Black History Month in 1976.
All through the month b5 bloggers have been talking about the accomplishments of our African-American citizens. Below is just a little bit of what they’ve had to say:
- From “Quilting and Patchwork,” a look at how quilters celebrate Black History Month
- From “Southern Byways,” things to do in the South to celebrate Black History Month
- From “Green Posse,” a look at the first Black player on the PGA Tour
- From “The Boston Traveler,” notes on the work of Harvard professor, Randall Kennedy

Very informative post, Sandy. I’m pleased you included Quilting and Patchwork.
