Blackcurrants with More Vitamin C
Blackcurrant juice is very high in Vitamin C, which not only help boost the immune system but also plays a role in tissue regeneration. It’s also packed with antioxidants, which are believed to have a variety of health benefits, e.g. in cancer, heart disease and aging. In an effort to further boost the vitamin content in blackcurrants, agriculturists are trying to figure out how the blackcurrant plant manufactures vitamin C from its starch stores.
Well, good luck to them. Meanwhile, the rest of us don’t have to wait til they’ve developed the super breed. Afterall, there are so many Vitamin-C packed fruits and veggies already in our midst: citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits, kiwi, tomatoes, spinach and broccoli, to name a few. You can also take Vitamin-C supplements, but personally, I enjoy eating fruits more than popping pills.
Incidentally, the research project described above is supported in part, by the company manufacturing Ribena, the blackcurrant fruit drink.

Hi Ruth,
I’ll mention on my blog, Alzheimer’s Notes (www.alzheimersnotes.com) that readers can find more information here about black currants and aging. Thanks, Mary Emma
