To kick off a “Bloggy Giveaway” here at the Food Bowl, you’ve got a chance to win one of ten copies of the book “A Friend Like Henry!” (Ten winners, one book each.)
The international bestselling book A Friend Like Henry is stealing the hearts of readers everywhere. It is an inspirational and compelling memoir by the mother of a young autistic boy named Dale and his golden retriever Henry.
While most people associate dogs as loving family pets or trained service dogs for those who are physically disabled, most people don’t think of them as a resource for those living with a condition such as autism.
The remarkable true story of Dale and Henry takes you on a journey of unconventional friendship, where a dog not only became an autistic boy’s best friend, but an invaluable tool for living life to the fullest.

Well, I have had a lot of childhood pets… they all seem to die really fast for some reason, or they are stolen. It’s sad. My favorite childhood pet was a siamese cat named Buddy who fetched like a dog. He was adorable and playful but our neighbor stole him and then said the cat was his. By the way, I have really wanted to get this book because I have an autistic cousin who I am really close to and I love dogs and own a few of my own.
I had a chihuahua named Taco, it peed on my toys and I hated it.
It was the late 50’s and she was a Cocker Spaniel named Maggie.
We had 3 dogs, (a spitz and 2 poodles), 2 horses, and a pet rooster. I was an only child and we lived on a farm, so they were my companions.
I had the wackiest part sheepdog part poodle,(go figure) called Mickey. The crazy dog hated everyone but me.
My aunt gave us a puppy she had rescued when I was a little girl. She insisted it would remain small. It grew up to be an Old English Sheepdog. It was the sweetest, gentlest dog on the planet. We had her for years, til we had to move into an apartment that wouldn’t take pets. Her name was Fanny (I named her after Fanny Farkle-anybody remember her?)I still think about her 30 years later!
We found a kitten still had its eyes closed. We had just given away the last puppy. Our dog became the kitten’s mom. It nursed her. She carried the kitten around in her mouth. The kitten was always wet. When it grew up, it ran to the door to greet us, and I swear it’s tail was wagging.
We had a dog Muffy and a cat Fluffy…yes my sister I got to choose the names
We always had dogs growing up.
My childhood pet was a cat named Spooky, although we just called her the grey cat (to distinguish her from the white cat).
I had a Springer Spaniel that my dad got from a friend of his. He was the best dog and when my girlfriends would come over for the weekend we’d use him as part of our play time and he’d get dressed up and sit while we pretended he was a character that we came up with. He always went camping with us too during the summer and would swim out to us and we’d have to pull him up on the raft where he’d just lay and sunbathe while all of us jumped in and out of the water. He was a wonderful dog and I was a lucky little girl to have him. Every time I think of him now it puts a smile on my face.
We always had dogs growing up. They were working dogs, used for herding cattle; but were actually more pets. For some unknown reason Dad always named them Sam. We only ever had one at a time, which was a good thing since they were always named Sam.
my best pet was a dog we named laddie, he was a great protecter of our family.

My brother is autistic. When we were growing up, we had lots of different dogs and a couple of cats too. All of them were SO good around my brother and he especially seemed to be drawn to the cats–he loves to put his hand on their bellies and feel their motor run.
Anyway, my FAVORITE pet was our happy go lucky cocker named Dusty. He was such a sweet pup and I really miss him:(
Mine has always been cats.
I had a mutt named Ginger growing up. She was actually older than me. Very tolerant of a baby (me) and then my little brother; she was a great companion and is still missed.
