Blood oranges liven up my winter diet
Mmmmm…. bloody fruit. OK, obviously there’s no actual blood involved here (this is a vegetarian blog, after all). Blood oranges get their name from the gorgeous deep red color of their flesh. On the outside their skin is either orange or orange with red.
They are less sweet than regular oranges, and I absolutely love them, for both their taste and their beauty. Blood oranges are in season in the winter, so I have had my eye out for them for a little while now. They finally made their appearance in my local grocery store this week. I bought a huge bag of them and have been getting plenty of vitamin C ever since.
Although blood oranges are delicious on their own, they also make a colorful addition to salads and other dishes. If there are any left in my house by tonight, I’ll be trying out this recipe for blood orange margaritas. Yum!

Interesting! I’ve heard of those, but I’ve never had one. I recently read that there are thousands of varieties of fruit in the world and Americans tend to eat, like, 10 of them regularly, or something crazy like that.
If blood oranges are a winter fruit why is the recipe for a summertime drink
Zandria – I read somewhere that they’ve started growing blood oranges in the US (California and Texas), so they might be available where you are. Keep an eye out!
Marty – must be because of all this global warming… it certainly isn’t too cold for a margarita here!
