Bobbi Brown and Her Work/Life Balance

Fashion Group International Presents The 25th Annual Night Of Stars

I’m always intriqued when I see a successful woman in the public eye talk about balancing career and family life.  Some women are so very busy that I just cannot imagine how they do it!

This article, which highlighted makeup artist Bobbi Brown , said successful women usually have a fantastic support system.  That sometimes means nannies, sometimes it’s a supportive partner, or even an understanding employer.

It makes sense, of course, that when you have a lot of help, you can “do more.”  However, I also think a lot of these successful women simply focus on one thing at a time.  They might get a lot done in a day, but they aren’t doing a million activities at once.

Take Bobbi Brown.  She said this was one of her typical days:

“I started my day at the “Today Show” and ended it giving a speech to 400 people at the Fashion Institute of Technology. But on my way home, I realized I forgot to pick up the googly eyes that my son needed to bring to school the next day, so I spent the next few hours rounding up a hundred of them.”

She also admits that she’s got a nanny to help her and that her husband comes along (with the kids) on her photoshoots.  The great part is that she is trying to cultivate a family friendly corporate environment in her own organization.  She said, “The people you work with have to be supportive of you having time with your kids and being home for dinner.”

I think the tough thing for the “average” woman is affording the help. I work from home. I am doing a TON of projects that keeps me up late and awake early. The problem is that we need every penny of that money and I can’t afford to get childcare for my toddler. So I have a constant guilt complex about trying to work and play with him at the same time.

Nikki: That’s absolutely true, and we’re in the same boat.

I feel for you with the guilt factor – and certainly understand it!
