Book Giveaway: Sixtyfive Roses

March 1, 2009 by Peggy Rowland

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a fatal genetic disease affecting the lungs and digestive system. Today, the predicted age of survival for someone with CF is more than 37 years.

According to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, about one in every 3,600 children born in Canada has CF. In the US, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation believes there are about 1,000 new cases of CF each year, with 30,000 children and adults in the US affected. Worldwide, that number rises to 70,000.

sixty-five-roses-CF.jpgSixtyfive Roses: A Sister’s Memoir by Heather Summerhayes Cariou tells the story of a family dealing with CF. At six years old, Heather promises her younger sister Pam, diagnosed with CF and given two months to live, that she’ll die with her. Yet, something very different happens in this moving story of two sisters dealing with what Pam called “Sixtyfive Roses.”

At sixtyfiverosesthebook.com, you can read reviews, as well as learn more about the author.

Five percent of proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to Cystic Fibrosis foundations in
Canada and the US.

If you’d like to enter to win the copy of Sixtyfive Roses: A Sister’s Memoir being given away at Lively Women, please leave a comment on this post before midnight CST on Thursday, March 12, 2009 (Updated expiration date is Monday, March 9, 2009). Since this book is about two sisters, it would be lovely if you’d share a special memory you have with your sister. If you don’t have a sis, please share why you’d like to win this book.

The giveaway is open to residents of Canada and the US. The randomly selected winner will have three days to respond to my e-mail requesting a mailing address.

I look forward to reading your comments!

This sounds like a wonderful book. This really isn’t a “special” memory but it was the first thing that popped into my head.

My sister and I used to share a room; we both slept in single beds.

I’ll never forget waking up one night feeling like someone was looking at me. I looked over to my sisters bed and she was sitting up staring at me, not moving, not blinking, omgoodness, I tell you I was terrified. lol

After saying “Jane” “Jane” “Jane” and her not moving and still staring at me, I got the nerve up to run out of the room and get my mother. Mom came in and grabbed her by the shoulders and gently shook her and called her name. Jane finally woke up and had no idea what had happened.

Omgosh, I have to go to bed now and that’s all I can think of; it was super freaky lol

    Thanks so much!

  23. Terri D says:

My sister had a traumatic brain injury from an auto accident at 20 years of age. She is now 49 and still has quite a few problems from the injury. So all I can see is we have been through every emotion together from joy and devastation to tears and laughs. We have more memories together than most people could ever imagine.

This sounds like a book that I would enjoy reading. I don’t like the mystery romance novels that are most common. I prefer non-fiction stories about real people and their lives.

  25. Amy says:

I come from a family who live with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) everyday. My mom’s sister passed away in 1981 at the age of 25 from CF. On July 1, 2006 my sister had a baby girl born with CF. My sister is my best friend and my niece means everything to me. I am here to help provide awareness and raise funds to find a cure, to provide my niece with a long-life. I look forward to reading your book, it sounds amazing.

When my sister was little, she had “the croup” and while Mom steamed her in her crib with a sheet overtop, I used to hold her hand through the bars.

My sister is my best friend.

  31. Pamela S says:

My sister and I wre born 14 months apart. We were best friends and each others anchor in a sea of troubled family problems with our parents and brother. She and I both had breast cancer. She died at the age of 46 almost 7 years ago. I’ve had the disease 3 times and am still here. I think of her every night when I go to bed as our beds were right next to each other and we talked so much growing up. I still talk to her and will miss her until the day I die.
