Book review and give-away – Chronic Pain Care Workbook

September 24, 2008 by Marijke Durning, RN
Filed under Diseases & Conditions

I enjoy reviewing books and I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again – if I don’t like a product or book that I’m sent, I will tell you. Luckily, I haven’t come across many of those so far.

Today, I have a workbook that was sent to me by a publishing company, New Harbinger Publications, Inc. The book, called The Chronic Pain Care Workbook, by Michael J. Lewandowski, PhD, wasn’t what I expected. To tell you the truth though, I wasn’t sure what I expected.

If you would like to know what I though, please watch this video where I explain what I found in the book.

I have a copy to give away to one of my readers, but if you would like to buy a copy, you can follow this Amazon Associates link where you can order it:

Now, to win a copy – from today until Friday, October 3, you can leave a comment in the comment section telling me why you would like this book. I automatically weed out any comments that don’t follow the rules, like "great contest" or "give me the book." I just want to know why you would like it, either for you or for someone else.

The contest will end on Friday, Oct. 3, at 11:59 PM, EST, after which I will use the randomizer available at randomizer.org to choose the winner.

Good luck!

I’d like to win this for my husband. He’s in pain almost constantly.

  2. Madam Pince says:

I have fibromyalgia, which is complicated by being the sole caregiver for my husband, who is dying of kidney failure. Anything that could ease my pain and make it easier to face the challenges of my life would be MUCH appreciated.

  3. Somerleigh says:

I have fibromyalgia and find it difficult and exasperating to wait on doctors to determine a course of treatment. I want to have good days again! Where I can get out of bed and stretch and yawn instead of hobble up and try not to cry because everything hurts :( . I need a plan, I’ve tried many of my own regimens but it’s all guesswork. I need something I can use by myself, for myself, that is organized and laid out for me!

  4. Jo Hake says:

I have been researching my Fibromyalgia since being diagnosed in December of 2007. I have lost my job and such a big part of my life due to chronic pain. I was once considered overly energetic and always busy and on the go. Now my life seems to consist of minimal everything. I feel accomplished when I have done my stretches for the day.
I am having financial problems as so many others are when they are hit with something not expected in life. I get all my information from online resources like livelywomen and chronicbabe, as well as WebMD support group. I cannot afford the things in life that I could when I was working. Now reading materials and anything that can help me make my life better are a valuable part of my existence. I have worked my entire life until the pain just finally shut me down and forever changed my life. I simply want a copy of the workbook in hopes that it will provide me with some ways of dealing with my illness and making some positive changes to help me feel better and hopefully make my way back into the working world or at least the land of the living again.

Please help me by sending me a copy of the workbook, I need it and would feel so blessed! It would certainly be put to good use and I would gladley recommend it to all my fellow Fibro Friends.

    Thank you,

    Jo Hake Abilene, Texas

I am currently embarking on a major journey of finally coming to terms with my pain (migraines and fibromyalgia) and I´m looking for all the helpful resources I can get my hands on.

  6. Mary B says:

I have “mild” ms and my husband has back pain. Maybe this book can help us.

  7. Lynn says:

I have fibromyalgia and I have found that some of the best care has been self care and lifestyle changes. (Although Lyrica is wonderful, too. :) ) I’m always looking for “workbooks” for the various conditions and pain and fatigue I have…and haven’t found one yet that I REALLY like. The Arthritis Self-Help book is OK, but it doesn’t have enough “worksheet” and “action item” type things for my taste. :)

    Thanks.

  8. Brenda Whiteway says:

I have been in pain for the past 6 years. Several months ago I finally asked my doctor for a referral to a pain clinic (I guess I’d been in denial before then). I’m still waiting for that referral – maybe this book can help in the meantime??

  9. Shelley Slider says:

My dad has Rhumatory authritis and is in pain everyday – I would love to give him this book

  10. Jennifer says:

    Hi Marijke,

This book sounds interesting. I was put on disability at age 26 due to daily migraines, endometriosis/intense menstrual pain and chronic back pain. A year later I was also diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. These are my main health issues that I feel cause my pain. I know people say they have flares, but my pain is pretty constant.. I never have a “0″ pain day. On a scale of 0-5 my daily pain hovers around a 3. My “flares” put me into the 4+ range. I have tried numerous methods to get my pain under control but I have yet been able to do so. Anything to try and aid my health and understanding of my ailments would be beneficial. I would love to try this book. Thank you.

  11. Carolyn Ellis says:

I have Multiple Sclerosis. I am an avid reader and anything that would help me deal with my situation is wonderful.

  12. Denise DiFalco says:

My neurologist has me on Lortab 5/500 mg, Tramadol and Flexeril for tarlov cyst disease and
RA throughout the spinal cord. Without medication
I cannot move around during the day. Your book
sounds like a “Ray of Hope” for those not only facing the
physical pain but emotional toll that one faces
    with these types of conditions.

  13. Mary says:

Fibromyalgia, arthritis, bad knees (waiting for surgery), chronic fatigue… Some days it takes me most of the day to get out of bed!?!?

  15. Lori Downs says:

  16. Shaun Davis says:

I would give it to my Mother. She has cronic pain, swelling and general sickness. She can’t seem to get very much help from her dozens of doctors. I would really like to help her.

  17. Maureen says:

Like all the other entries before I could list a bunch of the chronic illnesses I suffer from and the pain they create for me daily. I am always on the lookout for good resources, both for myself and for all my chronically ill friends, and this sounds like a good one. I hope whoever wins it, it provides some help. Thanks for the chance, and the knowledge that this book is out there.

In listening to your book review, I can really relate to the fear of pain. The fear of what is coming makes me tense and sometimes brings on headaches that last long after my knee stops hurting, thank you. If I win, I will for sure give a review.

  27. Ada says:

I work with a number of clients who suffer from chronic pain. In my work, I have found that there is no magic solution to relieve pain – every body is different and we often need to explore until we find the appropriate tool or technique to help relieve pain. As a result, I am always looking, learning and searching for better tools to help my clients, and I would love to learn more from Dr. Lewandowski in this book so I can help more clients find relief.

  28. Donna Kozar says:

I think I have fibromyalgia, so I really need this book.

  29. Veronica Garrett says:

I would like to win the book because both my husband and I suffer from backpain and we are not too hopeful that it will get better in the future. We would like to understand about this problem and how to cope with it.

I suffer with chronic migraines. I think our society has become trained to just pop pills as a solution to everything. The problem is that they often lead to more issues. I am always looking for alternatives. This book would be an asset. Thanks!
