Bookending – A Nifty 12 Step Tool

In Debtors Anonymous we have a tool called bookending. It’s a way of handling those chores we all have to do but we tend to procrastinate.
For example, if I need to write letter to a creditor, something I’m usually loath to do, I first call my sponsor and tell her I’m about to write and mail the letter. If she’s there, great, but it works just to leave a message. Then, when I’ve written the letter and put it in the mail, I call my sponsor back to report that I’ve completed my mini project. I’ve bookended an onerous chore with the calls.
I bookend all sorts of things, big and little. For example, I recently bookended writing a book proposal; I’ve also used this technique to get my closet cleaned and my laundry done.
I’ve suggested this technique to some of the people I coach (I’m also a writing coach) and they love it, so it works for non-12 Steppers too. I think it works for two reasons. The first is it makes us accountable and the second is we often discover we’re not the only one who puts off doing difficult things. When people bookend with me, I know I always get a lift; it’s a great opportunity to do a small bit of service.
With love, blessings and gratitude,
