Bratwurst for vegetarians

I have been a vegetarian for longer than I’ve spoken German. I was a vegetarian long before I first set foot in Germany. So while I realize how beloved sausages of various types are here in this part of the world, they have rarely caught my interest.
But vegetarian sausages? Those I’ll try, gladly. I found these veggie bratwursts at one of my neighborhood grocery store. They are vegan and certified organic. I recognize everything on the ingredient list, too. At 235 calories and 12 grams of fat per sausage, I wouldn’t want to be eating too many of them in one sitting. On the other hand they are high in protein (27 grams) and low in carbs (3.8 grams), if you’re into that kind of thing.
But the real question is, how do they taste? I had one for lunch slice up and fried with onions, bell pepper, garlic, and mushrooms, and served with a little mustard and hot sauce (and half of a big Bavarian pretzel). The sausage wasn’t bad. The texture was dense, probably too dense, but the flavor was pleasant enough, and the places where the skin got a bit crispy from frying were very pleasing.
This dish was so filling I couldn’t finish it (which is fine – I love leftovers!). I don’t think I’ll be buying veggie bratwursts on a regular basis, but I can definitely see bringing some along to throw on the grill next time I’m invited to a barbeque.
Are there any vegetarian sausages you like?

Though I very rarely buy subs, I have a certain love for the small TaiFun wieners. Most others leave me vaguely disappointed.
Is this a Viana/Tofu Town product? The packaging kind of looks like their thing.
I’ve already tossed (well, recycled) the packaging, but I’ll check the brand next time I see it.
I think I know exactly the TaiFun wieners you’re talking about – they are yummy!
My problem is that they still look like the meat version they are trying to copy. If they changed the shape, I might be able to eat it. For instance, if veggie burgers weren’t in a burger shape, I might be able to put in my mouth. Until then, I think I will pass.
I just checked the tofu town website and found them on it. Yay!
After rereading your review to see whether I would bother finding out if it’s among the tofu town products sold near me, I noticed you mentioning the denseness. While I don’t particularly remember this from any tofu town products (it’s been a while), I did recently get some Healthy Planet thing that was very dense and chewy as well. It sure was filling, but I didn’t like it that much.
That’s an interensting evolution of the wurst… everyday i spend in germany i loose 1 kg :S
