Breakfast Tip #5: Not Just for Kids!

This is the fifth of a series of blog posts on healthy breakfast ideas from Elizabeth Ward, who already shared with us easy solutions to squeeze in breakfast. Elizabeth Ward, M.S., RD is a multi-published nutrition consultant. Her latest book is The Pocket Idiot’s Guide to the New Food Pyramids (Alpha Books, 2006).

Breakfast idea #5: Banana dog (great for kids!).

Peel a medium banana and place it in a whole grain hot dog roll. Spread with your choice of peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, or sunflower seed butter.

Health Benefits:

  • These spreads are all rich in vitamin E, a nutrient that defends your cells against damage.
  • Bananas pack potassium, a mineral necessary for energy production in the body and for keeping blood pressure normal.
  • Whole grain hot dog rolls are rich in carbohydrates, which provide get-up-and-go energy for the day. Whole grain rolls are also higher in fiber than their refined counterparts. Fiber helps to keep you regular and may work to head off heart disease as part of a balanced diet.
