While October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, breast cancer deserves attention year-round. Yet, October is an important time for breast cancer since many events are held during the month to raise funds for breast cancer research.

Besides skin cancer, the most common cancer diagnosed in women is breast cancer. The American Cancer Society says that approximately 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in 2009. The list of breast cancer risk factors is extensive, and email rumors abound on what causes the disease. To get the right facts about risk factors and to debunk rumors you’ve heard, the American Cancer Society has an online Detailed Guide on Breast Cancer.
After lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer death in women is breast cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that 40,170 women will die from breast cancer in 2009.
Research is aimed at trying to change those numbers.
