Breastfeeding doesn’t cause boob sag

Seriously – contrary to popular belief, breastfeeding your baby doesn’t contribute to boob sag – drooping breasts. Sagging breasts has an actual medical term – it’s called breast ptosis.

It’s been said, it seems like forever, that if you breastfeed your baby(ies), your breasts will react by becoming droopy. Believe it or not, some women choose not to breastfeed for this reason. If you’re pregnant and are trying to decide whether to breastfeed, please don’t let this myth be your deciding factor. Because that’s what it is – a myth.

The results of a new study found that among women who wanted surgery to perk up their breasts, 58% had breastfed at least one baby. Both breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding moms had gained an equal amount of weight and 39% were smokers. Including all moms, 51% said that their breasts had sagged after being pregnant. The researchers also found that body mass index (BMI) and weight gain were significantly higher among moms who did not breastfeed.

In all, the researchers found that breastfeeding, no matter how long, was not a contributing factor, but that it was older age during pregnancy, higher BMIs, greater number of pregnancies, larger bra cup size before pregnancy, and smoking, were more likely to cause the boob sag.
