According to a press release issued today by the University of Florida, “…the same warm-weather activities that create lasting childhood memories are some of the leading causes of pediatric foot and ankle burns in the southeastern United States.”
They go on to say that in one study of 155 children with foot and ankle burns, 69% of them were caued by walking on “hot ashes, coals or embers.” Importantly, the researchers say, “with some injuries occurring as long as a day or more after the fires were thought to be extinguished. Most of these youngsters were barefoot or wearing footwear that did not fully cover their feet, such as sandals.”
