Calamari manhole

A lot of Japanese towns have custom man hole covers that tell a little bit about what the town wants to promote about itself.  Ours (Tsukuba) has a space theme because we are all about science and the Japanese satellites and gear often is built here.  Hakodate is famous for it’s calamari and so they have these really cool manhole covers.  The thief in me wanted to bring one home but the public spirited side of me said no and the lazy, couldn’t be bothered lugging 30kg of steel around side agreed.

  1. A lot of Japanese towns have custom man hole covers. Wow. custom man hole covers. I wonder how did such a practice begin?

I love the manhole covers in Japan and yours is no exception Tom. I put a Chiba one up a while back on my blog and I recently saw a neat fire department one in the neighborhood.
