Calling All Petite Clothing Designers!
I promise you, I truly understand that there are profound circumstances taking place in our world today: The war in Iraq, global warming, a missle in North Korea pointed at Seattle, Nicole Kidman’s wedding, et al…but there is also a retail situation going on that has me just as skittish.
Large department stores, such as Bloomingdales, Sak’s Fifth Avenue and the like…have either cut out or grossly diminished their petite clothing lines. (This tells us that either it’s true we’ve become a nation of obese people, or petite sized women simply don’t matter to designers). I think the latter.
Oh…the horrah!
No disrespect to “normal-sized” folks…but as a 5′2″–small-framed woman…trying to find clothing that fits properly, while not looking like a school district administrator, has been one of the pre-occupations of my working life…that and, of course, shoes. Believe me, skulking around in the boys department is not my idea of a lovely shopping experience.
This news, about such an obvious department store transgression, has caused hysterical anxiety among petite customers of these stores–I don’t understand why there has not been a very loud “A Ha” moment among young and upcoming designers?
Since not everyone is a 6′, burger deprived Gisele-type or Hollywood starlet, I am begging designers to make us some clothes — for work and play…that actually celebrate our form and make us look as if we too could work for Vogue!
I’m sure if we asked nicely, Anna Wintour could make this happen!

I used to shop at a place called five, seven nine (a long time ago) and loved it. They had up to date, in style clothing for “young people”. Not that I’m that young now, but I don’t want to look like my grandmother either!
I would love to wear what everyone else is wearing, but the longer tops look like dresses on me and the crop pants are not exactly crop pants on me. If you listen to fashion experts, they always mention the petite and how certain types of clothing flatter the more petite body. They know we exist. Let’s face it, I’m short. Make clothes that flatter shorter legs!
Why can’t someone figure out that petite does not mean I am old?
Can I get an amen
My wife is petite and for years has complained about the lack of great petite clothing.
Her answer?
She started her own company Balzac Clothing with the exclusive intent in mind of making fashionable/contemporary and hot
looking clothes.
You will all love it.

I make clothing, specializing in fit. It is frustrating for me when people associate petite with small. Petite is simply about height, no matter what size you are. I am currently doing a petite plus line. Check the website out
