Camp Weary Parent Time Travel Week Reading and Resources

Camp Weary ParentSo we are well in to week one of Camp Weary Parent and I can already tell I am going to have to mix things up next week. I think we should include the reading and resource list on Mondays not at the end of the week so look for that change next week.

Recommended reading for Time Travel week:

Our friends at One Book Two Book recommend the Magic Treehouse series for kids ages 6-9. My older two have loved the series and I am pretty sure my youngest is going to read them all summer. The main characters have a backyard treehouse which acts as the starting point for their many time traveling adventures through different periods of history.

For girls ages 8-12, any of the American Girl historical stories are good. Experience life through the eyes of a 10 year old girl in 1854 with the Kirsten: An American Girl : 1854 set; travel through the Underground Railroad with Addy: An American Girl/Boxed Set; go from riches to rags during the Great Depression with Kit an American Girl (and her movie is coming to the big screen on July 2); experience life as a Native American in 1764 with Kaya: An American Girl : 1764; or travel back to Colonial times with my personal favorite Felicity. There are more in the series - visit the American Girl website for games and activities for all of the historical characters and their time periods.

Don’t forget the classic H.G.Wells book, The Time Machine - written in 1895, this book stands the test of time and is a must read for all science fiction fans.

Joe Haldeman’s The Accidental Time Machine is a quick read for the older kids as it takes a light hearted approach to time travel when the main character accidentally invents a time machine that only goes one direction - to the future.

For teens:

For the younger set:

Other resources:

Don’t miss any of the fun - stop back in tomorrow or visit the Camp Weary Parent page for a complete listing of all the activities to date.

  1. Super list, Char, of reading and related material associated with the Time Travel theme. You’ve certainly done a great deal of research. This is an excellent resource list for parents, teachers, and librarians.

I’ll recommend it to One Book Two Book readers.

Also, thanks for mentioning One Book Two Book and our Time Travel theme this week, along with our Magic Tree House recommendation for Time Travel readers and learners.

  1. [...] having time travel week at Camp Weary Parent, and they’ve listed a whole bunch of great time travel resources. Time travel would make a really fun birthday party theme, or summer library kick off [...]
