Can You Hear the Ocean?

January 23, 2008 by Kristina Chew, PhD

It’s definitely been winter these past few days and we’ve been stuffing an extra coat into Charlie’s backpack—-inevitable that one starts to think “ocean” and “beachhouse,” sunshine on sand, and all the more upon hearing that (with the FDA telling parents not to give toddlers cold medicine) when it comes to cold, seawater seems to beat medicine. Time to get at least the sound of the waves roaring in our ears.

  1. Deb Hochhauser says:

Sadly, the thimerosal-autism debate obscures what should be a broader discussion. Namely, do enviromental toxins play a role in causing (at least some cases) of autism? Surely, we should not stick our heads in the sand, and try to frame the environmental exposure question solely in terms of vaccine safety, especially in the face of studies showing a possible link between airborne mercury pollution and autism (for example: Raymond F. Palmer, Steven Blanchard, Zachary Stein, David Mandell, Claudia Miller, Environmental mercury release, special education rates, and autism disorder: an ecological study of Texas, Health & Place, 12/2 (2006) 203-209).

  2. Ms. Hochhauser,

Thank you for commenting here, but please note that your comment does not appear to be at all related to the post about my son’s love of the ocean.
