Cancer and pregnancy – a much wanted birth

Would you have a baby knowing that it could make your cancer come back or get worse? This decision may seem foolhardy to some. To others, it’s a natural desire and one of those things that tells us that life goes on, no matter what. I’m in the second camp, which goes along with my philosophy of when it’s your time to go, it’s your time to go. I wrote about this in yesterday’s post Genetically modified child to eliminate cancer gene?

Today, I found a story of a couple from Australia who just had their first child, a miracle child. The woman, Candace Draper, had been diagnosed with a rare but insidious cancer when she was only 17. She’s had treatment and tumors removed from her lung, liver, and breast, but she has one in her brain that is too difficult to remove. She and her husband Thomas went ahead with plans for a child and five weeks ago, their daughter, Inara, was born.

What do you think? Now that Inara has been born, Candace can have treatment and is waiting to do another scan next month to see how large the tumor has become. She and her husband are thrilled with their choice, as most new parents would be.
